Those who were saved in old testament times were also saved by faith. (Hebrews 11). They had to advance from immaturity to maturity.
Yet, there was also a clear shift especially from the time of Christ and more so at his death, when the curtains were torn from the holy to the most holy place in the Sanctuary. Which started the age of the New covenant and order.
We also see that the holy spirit was offered to those of Christ's disciples who came after his ascension to heaven. Paul would be a good example here. So even if those who lived prior to Christ's ascension also received the holy spirit, this I am convinced must be an upgraded version containing Christ's human experience, born 4000 years after the fall, hence why the Holy Spirit then was also referred to as the comforter who could better sympathize with humanity in the last generations.
John 7:
"On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified."
